Democratic Party to File Complaint Against Candidates Kang Jinwon and Kim Taesung with Prosecutors
Illegal Party Membership Recruitment and False Address Registrations Suspected
Accusations Raised of Violating Election Law and Document Forgery
The Democratic Party of Korea (hereinafter referred to as the Democratic Party) has announced its intention to file a complaint with the prosecution against Kang Jinwon, a preliminary candidate for Gangjin County Governor, and Kim Taesung, a preliminary candidate for Shinan County Governor, on the grounds of illegal party membership recruitment during the party’s primary process.
On May 8, the Democratic Party stated in an official statement, “We are filing a complaint with the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors’ Office against former party members, including candidate Kang Jinwon and candidate Kim Taesung, for illegal recruitment of party members related to their primary campaigns, on charges of violating the Public Official Election Act, forgery and use of private documents, and obstruction of business.”
The Democratic Party claimed that, during its own investigation, it found evidence of multiple instances of duplicate addresses and false residency registrations among party members in Gangjin County, South Jeolla Province, who had been recommended by the camp of preliminary candidate Kang Jinwon.
Regarding preliminary candidate Kim Taesung, the party explained that it had discovered 68 party members whose addresses were duplicated across eight locations within Shinan County, South Jeolla Province, and found cases where multiple individuals submitted copies of the same identification card.
