Iran Claims "US Warship Hit by Missiles and Retreats from Strait"... US Denies Attack
On May 4 (local time), Iranian media reported that a U.S. Navy escort ship attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz was hit by two Iranian missiles in the Gulf of Oman and retreated. However, the U.S. military immediately denied the report.
On this day, Fars News Agency, citing local sources in southern Iran, reported that a U.S. escort ship violated navigation and ship passage regulations and attempted to transit the Strait of Hormuz near the waters off Jask in southeastern Iran.
Fars News Agency stated, "The U.S. warship became the target of a missile attack immediately after ignoring warnings issued by the Iranian Navy and proceeding with its maneuver. The ship was struck by two missiles, and as a result, it was unable to continue its voyage and turned back."
The Iranian military explained, "A few hours ago, U.S. Navy destroyers attempted to approach the Strait of Hormuz from the Gulf of Oman with their radars turned off. As soon as they turned on their radars, they were detected by Iranian forces and received a radio warning that there was a risk of violating the ceasefire."
The statement continued, "The U.S. destroyers ignored the warning broadcast, so the Iranian military conducted warning shots with several cruise missiles and multiple rockets, and deployed combat drones in close proximity to the invading vessels."
The U.S. Central Command denied the reports on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "Fact check. No U.S. Navy vessels have been hit. U.S. forces are supporting 'Project Freedom' and strengthening the maritime blockade of Iranian ports."
The statement added, "After passing through the Strait of Hormuz to support 'Project Freedom,' U.S. Navy guided missile destroyers are currently operating in the Arabian Gulf. The U.S. military is actively supporting the resumption of merchant ship traffic, and as a first step, two American merchant vessels have successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz and are sailing safely."
