Samsung Electronics has made a bold move in an attempt to reverse the fortunes of its TV business, which is currently facing a crisis. Amidst rapidly changing global market conditions, the company has unveiled a strategic personnel change aimed at fundamentally improving the structure of its Visual Display (VD) business and proactively securing new growth engines for the future. This appointment is particularly noteworthy as it was carried out outside of the regular personnel reshuffling season, highlighting the company’s acute awareness of the challenges facing its TV business and a sense of urgency that change can no longer be delayed. With Chinese companies such as TCL and Hisense rapidly expanding their market share based on price competitiveness and technological prowess, coupled with a slowdown in premium market demand, analysts believe that Samsung Electronics' TV business is experiencing one of its most challenging periods since its founding.
President Lee is considered the ideal candidate to enhance the competitiveness of the TV business, having demonstrated management capabilities and leadership by building the core foundations of Samsung Electronics’ TV and mobile service businesses. He is recognized as a “content, service, and marketing expert,” and his appointment aligns with the industry’s growing demand to move beyond the traditional hardware-focused TV business model and create new revenue streams by integrating content and services.
In particular, leveraging his extensive track record of business success and deep market insight, President Lee is expected to lead the turnaround of the TV business and play a pivotal role in discovering future growth engines. He will concurrently serve as both Head of the VD Division and Head of the Service Business Team, maximizing synergies. With a single leader overseeing both organizations, the formulation and execution of an integrated business strategy spanning hardware, software, devices, and services is expected to progress more swiftly.
Seokwoo Yong, who previously led the VD Division, has been appointed as Advisor to the Head of the DX Division. With his expertise in research and development (R&D) and extensive business experience, Mr. Yong will serve as an advisor on key future technologies across the set business, including artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics.
