Ministry of the Interior and Safety to Provide Up to 100,000 Won in Accommodation Subsidies for Island Tourists... Boosting Regional Vitality
2026 Designated as "Visit Islands Year"
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on May 4 that it will provide up to 100,000 won in accommodation subsidies to tourists who visit islands and stay overnight.
The ministry has designated and declared 2026 as the "Visit Islands Year" and will revitalize island regions by subsidizing travel expenses to islands. The Visit Islands Year is a policy being implemented for the first time this year with the aim of promoting balanced development in island areas through tourism activation.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety will provide up to 100,000 won in accommodation subsidies to tourists who visit islands and stay overnight during the summer vacation season (July to August) and the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo (September 5 to November 4). Detailed support criteria and application methods will be available on a dedicated website scheduled to open on May 18.
In addition, Jeollanam-do will independently operate the "Jeonnam Visit Islands Year" and provide up to 100,000 won in travel expenses. The Korea Tourism Organization will also hold an island accommodation discount event (Accommodation Sale Festa) in September in parallel.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety will also promote various participatory programs to encourage the public to maintain ongoing relationships with islands. As part of the "One Person, One Island Promotion (Campaign)," participants will be issued a "digital island resident card," and events will be held to connect travelers with their own companion islands or grant honorary island resident status according to their travel preferences. In addition, participation in island travel will be expanded through a certification event for visiting 88 selected islands, which are designated annually as "islands you want to visit."
