Jangseong County to Launch Seonbi Cultural Project with Star Historian Seol Minseok at Pilam Seowon
May 9, "History Talk Concert" Featuring the Academic Achievements of Haseo Kim Inhu
Jangseong County in South Jeolla Province will present the K-Seonbi Cultural Project at Pilam Seowon, a UNESCO World Heritage site, featuring star lecturer Seol Minseok and traditional game experiences.
On May 3, Jangseong County announced that it will host an event with star history lecturer Seol Minseok at Pilam Seowon, a UNESCO World Heritage site, on the 9th.
This event, the first program of the Pilam Seowon K-Seonbi Cultural Project, is a "History Talk Sarangbang Concert" that combines a lecture, interactive communication, and performances. Set at Pilam Seowon, a space where Confucian scholars continued their studies during the Joseon Dynasty, the event is designed like a "sarangbang" (traditional reception room), where participants can share and discuss stories related to Korean history. Admission is on a first-come, first-served basis for up to 200 people.
The main lecture will begin at 3 p.m., following a pre-show performance featuring violin, viola, and cello at the Cheongjeoldang Maru. Attendees can enjoy Seol Minseok’s engaging interpretations of the academic achievements of Haseo Kim Inhu, who is enshrined at Pilam Seowon, as well as topics such as Joseon-era Neo-Confucianism and the lives of Confucian scholars.
Until 5 p.m., an "experience booth" will also be open at the lawn park in front of the seowon. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, including making seonbi fans, trying on children's Confucian scholar robes, making Jangmyeongru bracelets, writing family mottos, and experiencing traditional games. Anyone can participate without prior registration.
Pilam Seowon in Jangseong was built in 1590 to honor the academic virtue and unwavering integrity of Haseo Kim Inhu, who retired from public office and returned to his hometown after the death of King Injong. The seowon functioned as an educational institution for Confucian scholars and is equivalent to a regional university today. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2019.
At the newly renovated Digital Relics Exhibition Hall, visitors can easily learn about the history of Pilam Seowon through digital facilities such as a media facade and touch screens. Artifacts such as the brushes and inkstones used by Haseo during his lifetime are also on display.
