The Special Committee for the National Assembly Investigation on the Truth of Alleged Political Prosecution and Fabricated Indictments under the Yoon Suk-yeol Administration concluded its activities on April 30 by adopting its final report.

View original imageOn the afternoon of the same day, the committee held a plenary session where the report adoption agenda, led by the Democratic Party of Korea, was passed. The committee also decided to file complaints against approximately 30 witnesses who, during the committee’s activities, committed perjury, failed to appear, or refused to cooperate in the hearings.
The report includes the results of three agency reports, two on-site investigations conducted by the committee, and the key questions and answers from the four hearings held during this period.
It also contains details on the prosecution’s investigations, indictments, and truth-finding efforts regarding the following cases under investigation: the Daejang-dong development corruption case, the Wirye New Town development corruption case, the alleged bribery involving former Deputy Director Kim Yong of the Institute for Democracy, the Ssangbangwool remittance to North Korea case, the real estate and other statistical manipulation allegations, the shooting of a public official in the West Sea, and the alleged false media reports intended to defame former President Yoon Suk-yeol.
Among the witnesses the committee decided to report are Park Sangyong, a prosecutor who investigated the Ssangbangwool remittance to North Korea case and refused to testify after being called as a witness. The Democratic Party of Korea also included in the complaints Kang Baeksin and Eom Huijun, prosecutors suspected of involvement in the Daejang-dong case before their official appointments, citing their refusal to testify or provision of false statements. Others cited include Kim Seongtae, former Chairman of Ssangbangwool, Bang Yongcheol, former Vice Chairman, Cho Woohyung, a loan broker in the Daejang-dong case, Kim Manbae, former major shareholder of Hwacheondaeyu, and accountant Jeong Younghak. In addition, concerning the shooting of the public official in the West Sea, former NIS Director Kim Kyuhyun, former First Deputy Director of the National Security Office Kim Taehyo, and former Secretary for Public Office Discipline Lee Siwon were also reported.

The committee operated for 42 days from the adoption of its activity plan on March 20 until the adoption of the final report on April 30. By law, the official activity period runs until May 8. The Democratic Party of Korea announced that if further witness complaints are necessary, it will convene another meeting before May 8 to take appropriate action.
