During the course of the crimes, it was found that three victims suffered injuries resulting in a comatose state. Previously, Kim had been brought to trial for handing out drug-laced beverages to three men in their twenties from December of last year to February of this year, killing two and injuring one.
At the first hearing held on the 9th of this month, Kim's defense attorney stated, "It is acknowledged that the defendant gave drug-laced beverages to the three victims in this case," but added, "However, the defendant believed the victims would simply fall asleep after drinking the beverages and denies the charges of causing bodily injury with a dangerous weapon or murder." The attorney further argued, "The defendant had no intention of causing serious injury or murder, nor was it foreseeable that death would occur."
