Interview with Lee Donghoon, CEO of Codepress

Developing an AX Maturity Assessment Model for Organizations

"Recognized Potential to Become the Global Standard for AI Competency Assessment"

"Companies may initially invest in tools or technologies for artificial intelligence transformation (AX), but no matter how advanced or expensive the AI tools are, efficiency gains will not occur unless the people using them change their work habits and routines."

Lee Donghoon, CEO of Codepress (pictured), emphasized in an interview with The Asia Business Daily on May 3, "The people utilizing AI are ultimately the key to successful AX," adding, "We are helping companies succeed in AX by enabling employee upskilling or supporting the recruitment of high AI-competency talent."

Codepress began in 2019 as a human resource development (HRD) company providing training in IT innovations such as AI and big data for corporate clients. Lee, who previously worked as a software engineer at LG Electronics and Smilegate, witnessed firsthand the challenges of digital transformation (DX). He explained the motivation for founding the company, saying, "As numerous new technologies like AI, big data, and blockchain entered the market, companies launched DX initiatives, but they faced difficulties because they couldn't foster talent suited to these changes." Currently, Codepress is evolving into a partner that assists companies with AX by providing AI utilization training and assessment solutions.

Codepress's business is largely divided into two areas: AI competency assessment services and AI utilization training services. The AI competency assessment service offers companies a solution to evaluate applicants’ skills in big data, programming, web development, and AI literacy during the hiring process. When applicants submit solutions to assigned problems, AI scores them. The assessment criteria are based on code quality factors such as maintainability, scalability, readability, and consistency, all of which the AI has been trained to evaluate. Lee stated, "Last year, the AI competency assessment service received a strong response in the market and contributed to doubling total revenue," adding, "We participated in evaluating local developers for POSCO DX Vietnam, providing objective hiring standards and an automated verification process."

Codepress also provides AI-powered training within companies. AI coding education is offered so that even non-developers can automate work processes using AI. The program consists of three stages: an onboarding phase to understand AI fundamentals and write prompts, an intensive course on utilizing AI agents, and a workshop on developing agents and software tools for automating work workflows.

Recently, the company has focused on developing an AX maturity assessment model for organizations, aiming to diagnose AX status and design roadmaps. The model evaluates an organization’s AI capabilities across four levels: AI awareness, auxiliary use, proactive use, and full automation. With this model, Codepress was the only Korean company to place third at the Supernova pitch competition for global startups at 'Xytex Asia' held in Singapore this month. Lee explained, "The key is that we quantify an organization's AI capabilities, set benchmarks, and enable efficient AX," adding, "This recognition shows our AI competency assessment could become the global standard."

Building on last year’s growth, the company’s goal this year is to achieve more than double its revenue. In particular, Codepress plans to secure paying clients in four countries—Luxembourg, Singapore, Japan, and Vietnam—to generate more than 10% of total revenue from these markets. Lee said, "Just as English proficiency is measured through standardized tests like TOEIC, we aim to establish a global standard for corporate AI competency assessment."
