LS Eco Advanced Materials Enters Robot Parts Market for the First Time... Supplying 'Winding Wire for Actuators'
Expanding Portfolio from EVs to Robotics
Synergy Expected with LS Eco Energy's Rare Earth Metals Business
LS Eco Advanced Materials is making a bold entry into the robot parts market by leveraging its expertise in winding wire (copper wire) technology for electric vehicles (EVs). On April 28, LS Eco Advanced Materials announced that it had secured an order for robot winding wire from a global robotics component manufacturer.
This marks LS Eco Advanced Materials' first order in the robotics sector, making it significant as it expands the company’s business portfolio—which has so far focused on EVs—into the high-growth robotics market.
Starting this month and continuing through the end of the year, the company plans to supply several thousand units of winding wire for robot actuators. Actuators are drive systems that combine motors, reducers, and controllers, and are key components that convert electrical signals into physical movement. Among these, the winding wire used in the motor is a critical part that converts electricity into power, determining both output and precision. Given that dozens of actuators are required for each robot, demand is expected to surge going forward. The company forecasts that by 2030, annual demand for actuator winding wire will expand to more than 1 million units.
The products being supplied this time are high-performance winding wires (rectangular wire) that deliver greater output and efficiency even in motors of the same size, and are considered core technologies that determine the performance of future mobility industries such as robotics, EVs, and urban air mobility (UAM). In Korea, LS Cable was the first to develop this technology, entering a market previously dominated by Japanese and European companies and steadily expanding its competitiveness.
This business expansion is expected to create synergy with LS Eco Energy's rare earth metals business. Once mass production of rare earth metals is in full swing, the company will establish a non-China supply chain for core robot components. In particular, a supply structure encompassing both motor winding wire and permanent magnets aligns with global customers' efforts to diversify away from China, and is expected to strengthen the company’s competitiveness in future order bids.
