"Take Care of the Cats"... Busan City to Temporarily Shelter Stray Cats Displaced by Suyeong Bay Redevelopment
Mayor Park Hyung-joon:
“Putting Pet-Friendly City Initiatives into Practice”
Busan City is moving forward with measures to temporarily shelter stray cats in the Suyeong Bay redevelopment area.
On April 23, Busan City announced that it would establish and operate a temporary shelter to protect stray cats that have lost their habitat due to the redevelopment of the Suyeong Bay Yacht Stadium.
The facility, which will be set up in a pine grove area within Dongbaek Park in U-dong, Haeundae-gu, will operate through public-private cooperation. The city will be responsible for securing the site and providing administrative and financial support, while I-Park Marina Co., Ltd. will assist with the installation of the facility and relocation of the cats. Local cat caretakers will be in charge of feeding and maintaining the hygiene of the cats on site.
The Suyeong Bay area is surrounded by the sea, a six-lane road, and clusters of apartment buildings, making it difficult for stray cats to move on their own. In addition, as demolition work for redevelopment began in earnest in April, there was an urgent need for protective measures.
About 50 cats, all of which have been neutered and vaccinated, are subject to relocation. After construction is completed, they will be returned to their original habitat.
