Kookmin University Successfully Demonstrates Quantum-Secure Satellite Communication
Achievement in Implementing Next-Generation Secure Communication Technology
Kookmin University announced on April 22 that the research team led by Professor Okyeon Lee from the Department of Information Security and Cryptology, in collaboration with Arion Communication, a satellite communication service provider, has successfully implemented and demonstrated a next-generation secure communication technology that combines low earth orbit (LEO) satellite communication with post-quantum cryptography (PQC, ML-KEM, ML-DSA).

It is also considered a core technology for countering the "harvest-now, decrypt-later" (HNDL) threat.
From a technical perspective, the team implemented an end-to-end encryption structure—including satellite links—based on a certified quantum cryptography module and post-quantum cryptography. They also achieved interoperability between the cryptography module and satellite equipment, and succeeded in linking Arion Communication’s IoT product line, the "TYTO" series, with Kookmin University's cryptography module.
Professor Lee’s research team plans to expand the application of this technology to defense communication networks, satellite-based battlefield networks, and unmanned systems (MUM-T), among other areas. They also aim to accelerate the establishment of a quantum security integrated cooperation hub. The university intends to provide an environment where companies can pursue actual certification and commercialization, thereby strengthening a connected system that encompasses verification, validation, and commercialization of quantum security technologies.
