This event, proposed by Assemblyman Kim and organized by the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT), was the second round table and was prepared to discuss ways to cooperate in research and development (R&D) between the offshore wind power and shipbuilding industries.
The event was attended by representatives from Jeollanam-do Province, Mokpo City, Mokpo National University, Mokpo Maritime University, the Green Energy Research Institute, HD Hyundai Samho, Korea Maid, and other industry, academic, and research stakeholders, who shared insights on the direction of industrial development.
Presentations included strategies for R&D cooperation in the shipbuilding and marine wind power sectors, the current status of the offshore wind power industry in Jeonnam, cooperation models between companies, and case studies of Crew Transfer Vessel (CTV) development.
During the subsequent discussion, consensus was reached on the need to move away from a focus on isolated individual projects and to establish an integrated cooperation system that connects R&D, demonstration, and commercialization in order to strengthen the competitiveness of the offshore wind power industry.
Assemblyman Kim stated, "The southwest region of Jeonnam has all the necessary conditions to grow into an industrial hub based on renewable energy," and added, "Through the RE100 National Industrial Complex, we must link energy production with industry and jointly establish the supply chain."
He also pointed out, "The industry cannot be completed with a dedicated pier alone. To create an industrial base, installation vessels and maintenance systems must also be in place." He further emphasized, "Based on the CTV demonstration project, the public sector should take the lead in fostering the offshore wind power industry, including the development of SOV technology."
In addition, he noted, "As the industry expands, demand for skilled professionals is expected to increase, so a workforce training system centered on local universities and specialized high schools must be established in parallel."
Assemblyman Kim concluded, "The key is to connect and build a cooperation system among projects that have been pursued separately by local governments, universities, research institutions, and companies," and added, "The National Assembly will also actively support Mokpo with laws and budgets to make it a hub of the offshore wind power industry."
