Trump: "Israel and Lebanon Agree to Ten-Day Ceasefire Starting on the 16th"
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on April 16 (local time) that Israel and Lebanon had agreed to an official ten-day ceasefire starting that day.
President Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social that "the two leaders have officially agreed to a ten-day ceasefire starting at 5 p.m. Eastern Time in order to achieve peace between their countries."
He added, "I have instructed Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Rubio, and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Dan 'Razin' Kane to work with Israel and Lebanon to achieve lasting peace."
Shortly thereafter, President Trump posted another message, saying, "In addition to the statement I just released, I will invite Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Aoun to the White House for meaningful talks between the two countries for the first time since 1983. Both sides desire peace, and I believe it will happen soon."
After the United States and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire on the 7th, Israel continued to attack the pro-Iranian militant group Hezbollah. When Iran strongly criticized this as a violation of the ceasefire agreement, Israel and Lebanon ultimately held talks.
