On the 12th anniversary of the Sewol ferry disaster, on April 16, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon emphasized, "I will make sure to create a Seoul where every citizen can sleep soundly at night."
On this day, Mayor Oh posted a message on Facebook titled "Reflecting on the Heavy Responsibility Toward a Safe Society" and stated, "On this April 16, which has come around once again, I pray for the souls of the victims who tragically lost their lives in the Sewol ferry disaster."
He especially wrote, "For the past 12 years, the desperate 'what if'—what if we had known in advance, what if the system had worked in time—has weighed heavily on all of our hearts. I believe that true remembrance means taking action throughout our society to ensure that such 'what ifs' never happen again."
He also made promises to create a Seoul where citizens feel secure. He said, "Seoul is now moving forward as a city that takes preemptive action, not just responding to incidents after they occur, but acting in advance even in places that cannot be seen. We will use AI technology to scan underground ground conditions to prevent sinkhole accidents in advance, and we will upgrade the system so that robot firefighters guard traditional markets at night, when few people are around." He added, "In urgent situations, police will immediately respond to a single safety bell, and even threats from above will be blocked flawlessly by a metropolitan urban defense system."
