"Just Changing the Roof Makes It Cooler"... Gijang County in Busan Launches Cool Roof Project
Full Funding for Vulnerable Groups
Anticipated Benefits in Energy Savings and Heat Wave Response
Gijang County is launching a practical support project to prepare for heat waves and achieve carbon neutrality.
On April 9, Gijang County announced that it will implement the "2026 Cool Roofs for Our Homes" support project, targeting vulnerable groups to help reduce energy consumption and respond to the climate crisis.
The Cool Roof project involves applying heat-reflective paint to building roofs or rooftops to lower surface temperatures by reflecting solar heat. This method helps reduce indoor temperatures and lowers the use of cooling energy, resulting in significant eco-friendly energy savings.
The support is available for single-family homes owned and occupied by climate-vulnerable groups such as seniors aged 65 and older, basic livelihood security recipients, and low-income households. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, and after on-site inspections to determine eligibility, final recipients will be selected.
Selected households will receive full funding for the construction costs of applying the heat-reflective paint to their roofs or rooftops, within the allocated budget.
Residents who wish to participate in the project can check the announcement on the Gijang County website and apply by visiting the Environmental Hygiene Division or their local township and village Happiness Community Center.

An official from the county stated, "The Cool Roof project is a climate crisis response policy that delivers significant real-world benefits at a relatively low cost," adding, "We expect it will also help reduce carbon emissions by lowering summer cooling energy use." The official further commented, "We will continue to expand carbon-neutral policies that residents can experience firsthand."
