Action Taken Just Two Days After President Lee Jaemyung's Call for Strong Response
The police have established a new 'Cyber Analysis Team' to respond to fake news and other false or manipulated information.
On the afternoon of April 8, Yoo Jaesung, Acting Commissioner of the National Police Agency, announced this policy during his visit to the Cyber Investigation Unit at the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency, which is currently investigating the spread of rumors regarding the 'forced dollar sale.' Previously, claims had circulated in internet communities such as cafes and blogs that, amid the prolonged Middle East war, the government would forcibly sell dollars. In response, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Koo Yooncheol filed a complaint with the police, requesting an investigation into the original distributor and those actively involved.

View original imageThe Cyber Analysis Team, which expands upon the existing task force for monitoring the spread of false information, will consist of a total of 16 members assigned to four provincial police agencies: 5 at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, 5 at the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency, 3 at the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency, and 3 at the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency.
Acting Commissioner Yoo emphasized, "Swift detection, blocking, and a strong response are crucial," adding, "We will thoroughly track down and punish the original distributors to ensure that the spread of false and manipulated information cannot take root any further."

The establishment of the police Cyber Analysis Team came just two days after President Lee Jaemyung called for a strong response to fake news during a Cabinet meeting on April 6. President Lee, referencing a wartime situation caused by the Middle East conflict, pointed out, "Deliberately spreading fake news that disrupts state affairs is an act of rebellion."
