Recipient of the Prime Minister's Commendation
Achievements in Prevention-Focused Public Healthcare Highlighted
Uljin County has received the Prime Minister's Commendation in recognition of its achievements in prevention-focused public health policies.
On April 7, Uljin County announced that it had been awarded the Prime Minister's Commendation on the occasion of the 54th Health Day, in recognition of its contributions to promoting national health. This award, hosted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, was created to identify and encourage individuals and organizations that have contributed to the improvement of public health, including the spread of healthy lifestyle practices, disease prevention, and the strengthening of public healthcare services.
In this evaluation, Uljin County was highly recognized for its consistent implementation of public health policies tailored to the characteristics of medically underserved areas. Guided by the principle of "prevention before treatment," the county expanded comprehensive health checkups and vaccinations for all residents, operated village-level health promotion programs, and fostered a participatory health culture. These efforts formed the basis for receiving the award.
Particularly noteworthy was the county's strengthened home-visit health management services for seniors with mobility difficulties and vulnerable groups, which helped to reduce blind spots in healthcare and narrow health disparities. The county was praised for establishing a comprehensive, prevention- and management-centered public health system that goes beyond simple medical support and is firmly rooted in the field.
Uljin County has also continuously provided financial support and enhanced functions at Uljin County Medical Center to strengthen the public healthcare infrastructure. Through these efforts, the county has minimized gaps in emergency and essential medical services and established a foundation that enables residents to access stable healthcare within their community.
Such achievements are seen as evidence that the "Uljin-type public health model," which organically combines prevention-focused health policies and financial support for public healthcare, is producing tangible results.
An official from the Uljin County Public Health Center stated, "The on-site efforts that prioritized the health of our residents have borne meaningful fruit," adding, "Going forward, we will further strengthen the integrated public healthcare system that creates a virtuous cycle of prevention, management, and treatment, and strive to establish customized health management and a community-based healthcare system in response to the super-aged society."

This award reaffirms that the role of public health is even more crucial in areas with relatively low access to medical services. The achievements demonstrated by Uljin County are regarded as an outstanding example of local health administration, and, beyond that, as a meaningful accomplishment that presents a direction for local public healthcare amid the challenges of a super-aged society and the risk of regional depopulation.
