Ministry of Justice Suspends Prosecutor Sangyong Park over 'North Korea Remittance' Investigation Allegations
"Deemed Highly Inappropriate for Him to Continue Performing His Duties"
The Ministry of Justice issued an order on April 6 suspending Deputy Chief Prosecutor Sangyong Park of the Incheon District Prosecutors' Office from his duties. Prosecutor Park is under suspicion of attempting to induce testimony and other misconduct during the investigation into allegations of remittance to North Korea during the tenure of President Lee Jaemyung as Governor of Gyeonggi Province.

View original imageOn April 6, the Ministry of Justice stated, "We have suspended Deputy Chief Prosecutor A (Prosecutor Sangyong Park) of a metropolitan prosecutors' office, who is currently under inspection for misconduct, including violation of official duties during the investigation into the North Korea remittance case and actions that raise questions about the fairness of the investigation."
This measure was taken at the request of Acting Prosecutor General Koo Jahyun. According to reports, Acting Prosecutor General Koo requested Minister of Justice Jeong Seongho to suspend Prosecutor Park from his duties in accordance with Article 8 of the Public Prosecutor Discipline Act.
Accordingly, the Ministry of Justice determined that it would be highly inappropriate for Prosecutor Park to continue performing his duties, given the nature of the alleged misconduct, and decided to suspend him from duty.

The Ministry of Justice added, "Currently, separate from the investigation cases referred to the second comprehensive special prosecutor, the Supreme Prosecutors' Office is conducting an inspection of Prosecutor Park through the Human Rights Violation Inspection Task Force at the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office," and stated, "Depending on the results of the inspection, swift and strict action will be taken."
