Jeonju Station Area Development, Stalled for Years, Gains Momentum
LH Applies for District Plan Approval to Ministry of Land
Public Viewing of Environmental Impact Assessment for One Month Starting April 6
Community Briefing Session to Gather Public Opinions on April 14
Compensation Begins in 2027, Completion Targeted for 2034
The Jeonju Station Area Development Project, considered the key axis of development in the eastern part of Jeonju, is accelerating as it enters what is effectively its final administrative procedures.
On April 3, the Jeonju city government announced that the project has entered its final administrative stage after Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) submitted its district plan approval application to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in March, followed by the submission of an environmental impact assessment at the end of last month.
Accordingly, procedures to collect public opinions regarding the environmental impact assessment will also begin in earnest. LH will hold a public viewing of the draft environmental impact assessment for one month, from April 6 to May 6.
In addition, on April 14, a community briefing session will be held to explain the project details and environmental response measures, as part of the process of gathering opinions.
Once the district plan receives approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the project will move into the full-scale implementation phase. According to LH’s plan, land and property compensation will begin in 2027, followed by site development works, with the goal of completion set for 2034.
The Jeonju Station Area will be developed as a multi-purpose hub, not just a residential complex, featuring an integrated transfer system connected to KTX Jeonju Station, housing for young people and newlyweds, and a combination of commercial, business, and cultural facilities. Through this, the city aims to restructure the economic framework of the eastern region, which has experienced relatively slower development.
Synergy with the ongoing Jeonju Station expansion project is also anticipated. With improvements to the residential environment in the station area, the city expects increased population inflow, as well as positive effects on production and job creation.
The Jeonju Station Area development project faced prolonged delays due to disagreements among institutions after the district was designated in 2018. Since the launch of the 8th popularly elected city administration, Jeonju city has focused on normalizing the project, holding dozens of consultations with LH and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport over approximately two and a half years.
In particular, there were ongoing disputes over improving the transportation system around Jeonju Station, but the city was able to resolve key issues by presenting a mediation plan. Major measures include the construction of an overpass at the Dongbu-daero intersection in front of Jeonju Station, expansion of the Dongjeonju IC access road, and widening of the Chopo Bridge.

A Jeonju city official stated, “To normalize this project, which had been stalled since 2018, we have held intense negotiations with LH over the past two years. We will continue to closely cooperate with LH, the project implementer, and spare no administrative support to ensure the project is completed on schedule by 2034, focusing all our resources on its successful implementation.”
