Alton Targets the Commuter Market with Electric Bicycles Amid High Oil Prices and Vehicle Restrictions
Alton, a leading domestic electric bicycle company, is accelerating its efforts to target the commuter market with new products featuring next-generation battery technology.
On April 2, Alton (CEO Kim Sinseong) announced that it would respond to the growing demand for alternative means of transportation amid high oil prices and tightening traffic regulations by introducing a new lineup of electric bicycles equipped with LMFP (Lithium Manganese Iron Phosphate) batteries.
With international oil prices recently exceeding 110 dollars per barrel and energy prices soaring, there are signs of a shift away from the private car-centered commuting model. The government has also raised the energy supply crisis alert level from “caution” to “warning,” and starting April 8, will implement an alternate-day vehicle operation system for public sector vehicles, further increasing interest in alternative modes of transportation.
In addition, the government has recommended a voluntary five-day rotation for private vehicles and imposed restrictions on the use of approximately 30,000 public parking lots nationwide, further worsening the environment for private car use. As a result, electric bicycles, which offer cost-efficiency and mobility, are gaining attention as a new alternative.
At “InterBattery 2026” held in March, Alton unveiled its new product lineup featuring LMFP batteries, showcasing its technological competitiveness. The LMFP battery maintains the high fire safety of existing LFP batteries while significantly improving energy density by adding manganese (Mn). Thanks to this advancement, the maximum range per charge has increased by 33 percent compared to previous models, reaching approximately 60 kilometers.
Based on this technological strength, Alton’s electric bicycles are emerging as a practical alternative for office workers burdened by high fuel prices and driving restrictions, coinciding with the seasonal increase in demand for bicycles in the spring.
