All for Followers: Brazilian Influencer Arrested for Staging Fake Kidnapping and Deceiving Husband
Husband Kidnapped Without Knowing Wife's Plan
A Brazilian influencer in her 20s who staged a fake kidnapping to gain more followers on social networking services (SNS) has been apprehended by police one year after the incident.
According to foreign media outlets such as the New York Post and G1 on the 29th (local time), police in Pernambuco recently arrested content creator Monique Fraga, age 27, on charges including false reporting and obstruction of justice.
Fraga had claimed since April last year that she and her husband Lucas were abducted by three armed assailants in front of their home in Igarassu. At the time, she stated on her SNS, "While Lucas and I were returning home, armed men surrounded us on the road," adding, "At first, I thought it was a car robbery, but when I saw that we were being forced into another vehicle, I realized the situation was serious."
According to Fraga's account at the time, the couple were held hostage in a jungle near a river and coerced to pay a ransom. Fraga said that when the kidnappers threatened to kill them, she felt despair at the thought of never seeing her family again. She added, "All I could think about were my children," and "I pleaded desperately with the kidnappers not to harm us, promising to give them whatever they wanted if they spared our lives." Fraga subsequently appeared on various media outlets to expose her alleged ordeal and attracted public attention.
However, a police investigation revealed that the entire incident was a staged act orchestrated by Fraga, who conspired with accomplices in advance to boost her notoriety. Police have secured concrete evidence, including communication records that show Fraga was in frequent contact with her accomplices and coordinated her movements before and after the crime.
The case has drawn particular controversy because Fraga's husband became an actual victim without any knowledge of his wife's plan. Detective Clay Anderson explained, "The husband genuinely believed he was experiencing a real kidnapping." During the abduction, he was violently assaulted and robbed by the assailants, and the family even paid a real ransom in an effort to save Fraga. Fortunately, it has been reported that the husband did not suffer life-threatening injuries.
The subsequent investigation uncovered the whereabouts of the three male accomplices. One is already incarcerated for another crime, while another was found to have been murdered before a warrant could be issued for his arrest. Police are expanding the investigation, including searching the residence of a third male suspect who is believed to have received the ransom payment.
