Wongeun Shin Confirmed for Third Term as Kakao Pay CEO: "Accelerating AI and Digital Asset Strategies"
CEO Wongeun Shin Reappointed at Shareholders' Meeting on March 23
Wongeun Shin, CEO of Kakao Pay, has been confirmed for a third consecutive term. As a result, his tenure has been extended until 2028.
On March 23, Kakao Pay announced that it held a regular general shareholders' meeting and approved the reappointment of CEO Wongeun Shin.
Shin, who was first appointed CEO in March 2022, extended his term once in March 2024. During his tenure, he was recognized for completing the blueprint for a "lifestyle financial platform" and achieving the company's first annual consolidated profit last year.
Over the next two years, Shin plans to expand existing businesses while implementing hyper-personalized services through user experience (UX) innovation. In particular, he intends to accelerate the "Next Finance" vision by shifting toward artificial intelligence (AI)-powered services and responding to a next-generation financial environment based on digital assets.
Within existing business domains, Kakao Pay will continue to pursue strategies such as vertical business expansion, scaling up of its data business, and strengthening platform competitiveness based on traffic.
In terms of expansion, the company plans to extend its value chain in payment, lending, investment, and insurance to adjacent areas such as general payment, alternative credit assessment, and integrated consultation and support services.
On the data business front, Kakao Pay will utilize its data assets to meet users' financial needs. The strategy is to boost business efficiency and drive user lock-in through hyper-personalized services.
To enhance platform competitiveness, the company aims to increase user dwell time with unique services and benefits, and to uncover new business opportunities such as comparison and recommendation of financial products like credit cards, and tailored advertising.
Additionally, Kakao Pay plans to explore AI-driven synergy opportunities within the Kakao Group and prepare for next-generation business areas based on digital assets—including stablecoins, blockchain, and Security Token Offerings (STOs)—centered around its "Super Wallet."
