"Korean Air Flight Attendant's Appearance Criticized: Instagram Post Sparks Heated Debate"
Korean Netizens Flood Thai Flight Attendant’s Farewell Post with Derogatory Comments about Appearance
Thai Users Push Back, Fueling Online Clash
A Thai flight attendant known to have worked at Korean Air became embroiled in unexpected controversy after sharing her thoughts on leaving the company through her personal social networking service (SNS) account. What was meant to be a simple farewell post attracted a series of derogatory comments from some Korean netizens, including remarks about her appearance and racist statements. Subsequently, Thai netizens joined the discussion, further escalating the debate.
According to The Thaiger, a Thai news outlet, on the 21st (local time), former Korean Air flight attendant A posted a farewell message on her Instagram account on February 28, along with a photo of herself in uniform. She shared photos with colleagues, captioned, "KE (Korean Air) was once a dream and later became a lesson."
Korean Netizens' Appearance-Related Comments Spark Backlash from Thai Users
However, after the post was uploaded, the comments section was soon filled with critical remarks written in Korean. Some domestic netizens left comments blatantly disparaging A's appearance, such as, "Is she really a Korean Air flight attendant?" "It seems anyone can get hired these days," "If I ran into her on a flight, I would have fainted," "How did someone with that appearance become a flight attendant?" and "Where can I file a complaint about Korean Air?" There were also a significant number of comments expressing racist views, including, "Is she Southeast Asian?"
A did not directly respond to these comments, but after Thai netizens saw the posts, they began to leave rebuttal comments, igniting a heated debate in the comments section. Thai netizens responded with remarks such as, "Rude Koreans," "Koreans are the worst," "Why do you all swarm in here to leave malicious comments?" "Koreans all look the same because of plastic surgery," and "Koreans are truly disgusting."
Local Media Point Out Problems in Korean Online Culture
Local media outlets reporting on the incident criticized the culture of online harassment in Korea. Some outlets mentioned Korea's high suicide rate and past cases of celebrities suffering from malicious comments, highlighting the recurring nature of aggressive online behavior.
