Acting Prosecutor General Regrets Lack of Communication in Prosecution Office Act Legislation Process
Gu Jahyun Addresses Prosecution Members via Email
"Much of the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office’s Efforts Not Reflected... I Am Sorry"
Gu Jahyun, Acting Prosecutor General, expressed regret that there was insufficient communication during the legislative process regarding the bill to establish the Prosecution Office.
According to legal circles on March 19, Acting Prosecutor General Gu stated in an email sent to members of the prosecution that "the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office has made various efforts to establish the constitutional status and role of the Prosecutor General and prosecutors, to design an organizational structure that allows the public to feel its effectiveness, and enables prosecutors to faithfully fulfill their duties."
He continued, "As Acting Prosecutor General, I am sorry that much of these efforts were not reflected in the current Prosecution Office bill, and I believe that our prosecution family also shares a deep sense of disappointment."
He added, "As Acting Prosecutor General, I regret that there was not broader communication and consensus-building during the legislative process, particularly regarding the proper operation of the criminal justice system to protect the rights and interests of the public, and the guarantee of the prosecution's political neutrality and independence. However, it is well known that the prosecution still has a constitutionally mandated role, and that many citizens are waiting for the prosecution to fulfill its duties and uncover the substantive truth."
