North Korea Fires About 10 Ballistic Missiles into East Sea in Unprecedented Show of Force
Seen as a Response to South Korea-US Joint Military Exercises
North Korea fired about 10 ballistic missiles into the East Sea on the 14th. Launching more than 10 missiles at once is highly unusual and is interpreted as a response to the ongoing South Korea-US joint military exercises.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff announced on the 14th, "At approximately 1:20 p.m. today, we detected about 10 unidentified ballistic missiles launched from the Sunan area of North Korea toward the East Sea." They added, "In preparation for possible additional launches, we are closely sharing relevant information with the United States and Japan and maintaining full readiness."
South Korean and US intelligence authorities are currently analyzing the specifications and range of the North Korean ballistic missiles.

This missile launch drew attention as it took place after US President Donald Trump expressed his willingness to engage in dialogue with Kim Jong Un, Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of North Korea. President Trump, during his meeting with Prime Minister Kim Minseok at the White House on the 13th (local time), reportedly asked, "I wonder if Chairman Kim Jong Un wants dialogue with the United States and with me."
However, despite President Trump's so-called "love call," North Korea responded with a ballistic missile launch in less than a day.
This provocation by North Korea is also interpreted as a protest against the ongoing South Korea-US joint military exercise "Freedom Shield" (FS), which is scheduled to run until the 19th.
