New York Stock Exchange Closes Lower Amid Middle East War Fallout and Weak Economic Indicators
Dow and S&P 500 Hit New Lows for the Year
The New York Stock Exchange closed lower as international oil prices rose due to the aftermath of the U.S.-Israel war, and economic indicators fell short of expectations.
On March 13 (local time), the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended trading at 46,558.47, down 119.38 points (0.26%) from the previous session.
The Standard & Poor's (S&P) 500 Index closed at 6,632.19, down 40.43 points (0.61%), and the Nasdaq Composite Index finished at 22,105.36, down 206.62 points (0.93%). Both the Dow Jones and S&P 500 hit their lowest levels of the year.
The New York Stock Exchange opened higher that morning, but reversed its gains and turned lower after reports emerged that the United States had intensified its attacks on Iran.
U.S. President Donald Trump said in a Fox News interview that the United States "will strike Iran very hard over the coming week."
