Renewable Energy CEO Swings Baseball Bat in Office... Ministry of Labor Launches Special Inspection
The government has launched a special labor inspection into a renewable energy company whose CEO has been accused of threatening employees by swinging a baseball bat in the office and making remarks involving weapons.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor announced on March 13 that it would conduct a special inspection following recent media reports alleging that the CEO of a Seoul-based renewable energy firm, referred to as 'O', engaged in threatening behavior such as swinging a baseball bat in an office with employees present and making verbal threats including, "I will stab you with a weapon." According to the reports, the CEO allegedly kept a weapon wrapped in tape in his office drawer and made statements to employees implying he would stab them with it.
Given the seriousness of the situation, the Ministry has formed a joint inspection team comprising the Metropolitan Labor Standards Supervision Division of the Seoul Regional Employment and Labor Office and the Labor Standards Supervision Division of the Seoul Gwanak Branch Office. The joint team, consisting of eight inspectors, plans to conduct a swift and thorough special labor inspection of the workplace.
The inspection will focus on whether there have been violations of the prohibition of assault under the Labor Standards Act and whether workplace harassment has occurred. Article 8 of the Labor Standards Act prohibits employers or employees from assaulting workers, while Article 76-2 prohibits workplace harassment.
In addition, the Ministry will also check for wage arrears and compliance with working hour regulations, as well as other aspects covered by labor laws in general. If any illegal activities are identified as a result of the inspection, the Ministry intends to take strict action in accordance with the relevant laws.
