Chungnam Province's "AI-Based National Research Platform Development" project, targeting a paradigm shift in display technology—a core strategic industry for South Korea—has passed its initial hurdle toward full-scale implementation. This large-scale initiative aims to secure next-generation display source technologies and concentrate the industrial ecosystem, drawing attention to whether Chungnam can emerge as a key research hub amid intensifying global technological competition.

On March 12, Chungnam Province announced that the "Advanced Display National Research Platform Development Project," which it attracted through a contest by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, has been selected as a candidate for the preliminary feasibility study by the Ministry of Science and ICT.

This project seeks to establish an open research platform based on artificial intelligence (AI) to secure next-generation display source technologies and to establish an integrated full-cycle support system spanning technology development, process, demonstration, and mass production.

The project will be established at the Asan Tangjeong Techno General Industrial Complex over the next seven years, from 2025 to 2033, with a total investment of 520 billion won.

By 2030, Chungnam Province plans to invest 200 billion won to build research facilities with a total floor area of 8,000 square meters and to install 56 types of research equipment.

The research institute will serve as the control tower for advanced display research involving companies, universities, and research organizations, functioning as a national technology hub that commercializes research outcomes.

Furthermore, by 2033, 320 billion won will be invested to pursue 31 research and development (R&D) projects—including materials, components, processes, and systems—to secure next-generation, ultra-advanced technologies.

The province believes that, as the display industry rapidly shifts to OLED and Chinese technological competition intensifies, establishing this platform will mark a key turning point for securing global competitiveness.

In particular, the strategy is to create a one-stop support system that connects design, demonstration, and commercialization by linking with specialized clusters for display materials, components, and equipment, the Innovation Process Center, and the Smart Modular Center. Through a full-cycle R&D system, the province aims to widen the gap in next-generation display technology by more than three years.

The province will focus its administrative resources on passing the preliminary feasibility study in the second half of this year, aiming to launch the project next year.

Anho, Economic Chief of Chungnam Province, stated, "The Advanced Display National Research Platform will become a global research hub connecting AI-based technology development, manufacturing, and commercialization. We will do our utmost to ensure the success of the preliminary feasibility study and subsequent procedures."

Meanwhile, Chungnam Province is working to secure a technological edge in the display industry by: establishing the Display Innovation Process Center; establishing the Inorganic Light-Emitting Display Smart Modular Center; designating specialized clusters for materials, components, equipment, and national advanced strategic industries; building a foundation for attachable display technologies; and supporting display quality enhancement and commercialization.
