'Abnormal Motive' Crime Driven by Social Isolation
The suspect in the so-called 'Gangbuk Drug Serial Murders'—who went from motel to motel in Seoul’s Gangbuk District, giving male victims narcotic-laced substances that led to their deaths or left them in critical condition—has been brought to trial. Prosecutors have defined this case as a brutal 'abnormal motive' premeditated crime, in which the suspect instrumentalized others for personal financial satisfaction and even checked the likelihood of death in advance using artificial intelligence (AI).

Kim is accused of killing two men and seriously injuring another by having them drink beverages mixed with benzodiazepine-class psychotropic drugs in the areas of Namyangju and Gangbuk District, Seoul, from December 2025 to February of this year.
According to the prosecution’s investigation, Kim’s crimes were meticulously planned. In order to fabricate psychiatric records needed for a separate criminal complaint, Kim feigned post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and obtained sleeping pills, which were then used as instruments of the crime. Notably, even after confirming via ChatGPT that “an overdose of such drugs can be fatal,” Kim displayed brutality by doubling the dosage for subsequent victims after observing that a prior victim had fallen into a coma.
The prosecution analyzed that the background of this case lay in Kim’s pronounced egocentric tendencies and social isolation. Kim grew up in a dysfunctional household exposed to ongoing alcohol-fueled violence and verbal abuse by her father from an early age, which led to emotional and social disconnection, and ultimately a strong egocentric personality devoid of empathy for others.
Kim exploited men to fulfill her own desires for consumption and financial satisfaction, and when she deemed further relationships unnecessary, she chose to subdue and kill them using drugs. According to expert analysis, Kim exhibited classic characteristics of an abnormal motive violent crime, including a lack of guilt and empathy, as well as marked impulsivity.
Considering the seriousness and brutality of the crimes and the public's right to know, prosecutors disclosed Kim’s personal information after review by the Personal Information Disclosure Review Committee. Immediately after the incident, the prosecution also worked with the Crime Victim Support Center to promptly provide the bereaved families with funeral expenses, medical costs, and psychological counseling as required.
