Ministry of Science and ICT Holds 2nd Korea-Japan ICT Policy Forum... Strengthening Cooperation in Technologies Including 6G
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it had reached a consensus with Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) to expand cooperation in information and communication technology (ICT) as well as in fields such as AI and 6G.
According to the Ministry of Science and ICT on February 27, the two sides held the 2nd Korea-Japan ICT Policy Forum during the National Science and Technology Advisory Council meeting. The Korean delegation was led by Second Vice Minister Ryu Jemyoung of the Ministry of Science and ICT, while the Japanese side was represented by Imagawa Takuo, Vice Minister for International Affairs at the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.
This forum is a follow-up measure to last month’s Korea-Japan summit, where both countries agreed to broaden cooperation in science and technology and AI. The main topics at the forum included AI, digital technology standards, and cybersecurity. The Ministry of Science and ICT and Japan’s MIC shared updates on policy issues and the status of cooperation in each field.
The two ministries discussed further strengthening cooperation in digital emerging technologies such as AI and 6G for future-oriented collaboration. The Ministry of Science and ICT introduced Korea’s overall AI policy and stated that the two countries would expand cooperation in the AI sector, particularly centering on global AI governance. In addition, the ministry emphasized the importance of Korea-Japan collaboration in international standardization activities related to 6G networks and discussed ways to solidify cooperation frameworks between the standardization bodies of both nations.
Since the first Korea-Japan ICT Policy Forum in 2023, both ministries reviewed the progress of bilateral ICT cooperation and agreed to continue close communication going forward. They also introduced leading ICT firms from each country and explored ways to facilitate vibrant private sector cooperation.
