Sancheong-gun to Hold Jisinbalgi Event at Namsa Yedamchon for the First Full Moon Festival
Pungmul troupe tours the village, reenacting traditional rituals to pray for peace and a good harvest
Residents and pungmul troupe take part in a seasonal event to ward off misfortune and pray for good fortune
Sancheong-gun in South Gyeongsang Province announced on the 24th that, in celebration of the first full moon of the lunar year, it will hold the "2026 Namsa Yedamchon Jisinbalgi Event" in and around Namsa Yedamchon from Sunday, March 1 to Monday, March 2.
This year's event is hosted by the Namsa Yeo-sa Winter Group (yakjang Lee Byeonghee) and organized by the Yedamchon Pungmul Troupe (leader Lee Sangjeung).
Jisinbalgi is a traditional folk ritual held around the first full moon of the lunar year, in which a pungmul troupe goes around the village to pray for peace and a good harvest for the year. To the rhythms of traditional percussion instruments such as kkwaenggwari, janggu, buk, and jing, they go around homes and yards, exchange words of blessing, drive away misfortune, and pray for good fortune.
During the event, members of the Yedamchon Pungmul Troupe and village residents will take part together, visiting major points in the village and individual households to perform the Jisinbalgi ritual and pungmul performances.
In particular, with support from the Gisan Gugakdang, this event aims to reconnect the pungmul that residents have learned with the village's tourism resources, and to be held as a participatory program where residents and visitors mingle together. It is expected that this will allow people to experience more closely the excitement of traditional pungmul and the significance of Korea's seasonal customs.
Sancheong-gun expects that this event will widely promote the traditional culture of Namsa Yedamchon, enhance the appeal of the hanok village, and help revitalize local tourism.
