"From Coal to a Hydrogen City"... Boryeong Breaks Ground on First Green Hydrogen Production Base at Power Plant Site
Utilizing Idle Land at Shin Boryeong Power Headquarters for a 2.5 MW Water Electrolysis Facility...
Producing 395 Tons of Clean Hydrogen Annually and Fully Launching the "Just Transition"
A hydrogen production facility will be built on the site that once symbolized coal-fired power generation. Boryeong in South Chungcheong Province has become a testing ground for the transition of the energy industry structure.
The Boryeong City Government announced on the 23rd that in January it broke ground on the construction of a "water electrolysis-based green hydrogen production base" within the Shin Boryeong Power Headquarters site, in cooperation with South Chungcheong Province, Korea Midland Power, Hyundai Engineering, Techcross Water & Energy, and ISTE.
The core of the project is to install water electrolysis facilities with a total capacity of 2.5 MW and produce approximately 395 tons of clean hydrogen per year.
This is enough to fully charge about 79,000 hydrogen passenger vehicles.
In particular, it is highly symbolic in that it is the first project in the country to utilize idle land within a large-scale thermal power plant.
At a time when concerns are being raised about job losses and the weakening of the local economy due to the reduction of coal-fired power generation, the project is being evaluated as a case of a "just transition" by converting existing energy infrastructure into a hydrogen industry hub.
The Boryeong City Government plans to link the hydrogen produced with hydrogen charging stations in the jurisdiction to build a local supply chain and expand demand for hydrogen vehicle use.
Through this, it aims to attract external demand inflows and promote related sectors such as tourism and service industries.
