Jeollanam-do Selects Boseong's "Nokchapeumeunseom" as February's Traditional Liquor
A Traditional Green Tea Distilled Spirit to Enjoy on the Threshold of Spring
Jeollanam-do has selected "Nokchapeumeunseom" by Hyanggipeumeun Swiulseom as February's representative traditional liquor of the month.
Nokchapeumeunseom is a distilled soju made from non-glutinous rice, to which roasted green tea from Boseong and young barley extract are added, creating a distilled spirit where the subtle, original aroma of green tea harmonizes with the nutty flavor of rice-based distillate.
It offers a calm, understated aroma, with the nuttiness from the rice and a restrained sweetness in balance. Rather than an assertive green tea scent, it is characterized by an overall clean and refined taste. Despite being a distilled spirit with 40% alcohol by volume, it does not have a strong alcoholic bite and finishes clean.
It pairs well with the seasonal mood of February, when the end of winter meets the beginning of spring after Ipchun (the start of spring in the traditional calendar). When sipped slowly straight, one can appreciate the subtle aroma of green tea and the light, clean character of the rice distillate. The balance of flavor is maintained even when ice or a small amount of water is added, allowing it to be enjoyed in various ways.
Hyanggipeumeun Swiulseom, which produces Nokchapeumeunseom, makes traditional liquor using Boseong green tea and local agricultural products as main ingredients, and is showcasing products that highlight regional characteristics, such as "Olbyopeumeunseom," made with Boseong Olbyo rice, and "Hongchapeumeunseom," made with black tea.
