Master cartoonist Lee Hyunse is personally remaking his hit work from 35 years ago and presenting it as a webtoon.
Kakao Entertainment announced that Lee's new webtoon, "Blue Angel Reboot," will be serialized on KakaoPage and Kakao Webtoon starting on the 13th. The original work, "Blue Angel," which was published as a standalone volume in 1991, is a hard-boiled action series featuring a tough female detective named Ha Jiran, who dives into brutal crime scenes. At the time, it created a huge sensation with its powerful female narrative, on par with the artist's signature characters such as Kkachi and Eomji.
The reboot inherits the original universe but adds a contemporary touch. It depicts a brutal revenge drama in which Ha Jiran, facing death on the verge of retirement, regains her youthful appearance and sets out for vengeance. Unlike the original, which was drawn in black and white, the new version is produced as a full-color webtoon, and it is said that particular effort has been put into delivering dynamic, high-impact action scenes.
Lee said, "At its core, it is a story about a tough female detective whose world is dark and gloomy, but who stubbornly insists that life is still worth living because there is love," adding, "I drew it with the fierce mindset that this could be my last webtoon."
