Eseuemji Yonsei Hospital, operated by the medical corporation Hapo Medical Foundation, is strengthening its patient-centered advanced medical services by introducing the innovative "Regeneten surgical technique" for the treatment of rotator cuff tears in the shoulder.
This surgical technique is a minimally invasive method that uses Regeneten, a collagen-based bioinductive implant, to promote the natural regeneration of partially or completely torn tendons (rotator cuff). It is expected to dramatically solve the problem of high re-tear rates associated with conventional surgery.
To enhance its expertise in the field of orthopedics, the hospital recently invited orthopedic specialists, including Department Head Min-kyu Kim (shoulder joint, diabetic foot necrosis, knee joint, hip joint, etc.) and Department Head Beom-seok Lee (shoulder and knee arthroscopic surgery, ligament reconstruction surgery, etc.), and has completed preparations to introduce this technique to local residents.
A rotator cuff tear is a condition in which one or more of the four tendons that stabilize the shoulder joint (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis) become torn or ruptured due to aging or repetitive use. It is one of the leading causes of rapidly increasing chronic pain in Korea.
According to statistics from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, the number of patients with rotator cuff syndrome reached about 890,000 in 2023, an increase of more than 60% compared to 550,000 in 2014. In particular, people in their 50s and 60s account for 60% of all patients. Symptoms include severe pain and weakness when lifting the arm or holding a broom, and if left untreated, the condition can progress to a complete tear, potentially making daily life impossible.
The core of the Regeneten surgical technique is to attach a collagen patch to the torn tendon area using arthroscopy, a minimally invasive method in which a camera is inserted through a small incision. This patch induces the formation of new tendon tissue in the body over three months and is naturally absorbed within six months, being replaced by normal tendon. The surgery time is short, the incision is small, and it can significantly reduce the patient's pain and rehabilitation period. It can be applied to both partial and complete tears.
