Netflix Bets on Daily Variety Shows... Launches "Corporal Kim Wonhun" and More
Ayaka Miyoshi Joins Sung Si Kyung in "Crazy Restaurants"
Netflix is breaking away from its traditional 'weekend binge-watching' formula and is aiming to change viewing habits by introducing 'variety shows that come to you every day.'
On January 19, Netflix announced its daily variety show lineup for the first half of the year, revealing plans to sequentially launch six new shows ranging from brain survival competitions to gourmet talk shows and music entertainment.
The lineup kicks off on January 28 with "Death Game: Bet Ten Million Won." This survival show features a rule where contestants are immediately eliminated if they lose a one-on-one match. Verified players such as Hong Jinho, Lee Sedol, and Seven High will participate, along with Pengsoo and Park Sungwoong, while Jang Dongmin from "The Genius" will serve as the commentator.
On February 2, "Corporal Kim Wonhun: The World of Military Positions" will follow. This real variety show features Kim Wonhun, the main star of the YouTube channel "Shortbox," who re-enlists after completing his military service as a sergeant to experience special military roles.
There are also signs of efforts to expand globally. In "Crazy Restaurants," which will be released every Thursday, Japanese actress Ayaka Miyoshi joins as a partner to Sung Si Kyung. Known for her role in the Netflix series "Alice in Borderland," she is recognized as a pro-Korean actress and has also been cast in the upcoming film "Tazza: Song of Beelzebub," slated for release this year.
