Gwangju Metropolitan Library Construction Site Collapse: One Worker in Cardiac Arrest, Three Trapped
At 1:58 p.m. on December 11, 2025, a steel structure collapsed at the construction site of the 'Gwangju Metropolitan Library,' which is being built on the site of the former Sangmu Incineration Plant in Chipyeong-dong, Seo-gu, Gwangju.
As a result of the accident, four workers at the construction site were buried under the collapsed structure.
One of the buried workers was transported to the hospital in cardiac arrest. The location of another worker has been visually confirmed, and rescue operations are underway. The locations of the remaining two workers have not yet been identified.
The Gwangju Metropolitan Library was planned by the city of Gwangju to be built on the site of the former Sangmu Incineration Plant, with a total investment of 51.6 billion won, a total floor area of 11,286 square meters, and two basement floors and two above-ground floors.

The police and fire authorities plan to investigate the exact cause of the accident as soon as the rescue operation is completed.
