U.S. Navy Adopts Palantir AI to Resolve Submarine Construction Delays
Supply Chain Bottlenecks Expected to Ease with "Foundry" and "AIP"
The United States Navy has decided to adopt technology from Palantir, an artificial intelligence (AI) data analytics company, to address delays in submarine construction.
According to Bloomberg and other sources on December 9 (local time), the U.S. Navy and Palantir announced the 'ShipOS' software initiative for submarine construction, maintenance, and repair. Under this plan, Palantir will provide its AI platforms, Foundry and AIP, to the U.S. Navy.
The U.S. Navy aims to leverage Palantir's AI-based analytics capabilities to identify supply chain issues and shorten submarine construction timelines. In particular, the Navy expects to accelerate the construction of Virginia-class and Columbia-class submarines, which have been plagued by cost overruns and project delays.
Initially, two major shipbuilders and three U.S. government-owned shipyards will receive Palantir's software, according to the company. While the specific companies were not disclosed, Bloomberg noted that General Dynamics and HII are currently building 12 Columbia-class submarines.
Palantir stated, "For decades, fragmented technology systems and isolated data have resulted in unnecessary project delays and cost overruns, reducing the efficiency of U.S. shipyards. Our AI-based tools will support all shipbuilders participating in this project."

However, Bloomberg pointed out that this partnership could further increase the U.S. military's reliance on Palantir. Palantir is currently involved in the Army's next-generation AI-powered mobile battlefield intelligence system, the Titan program, and its AI-driven military intelligence analysis platform, Maven Smart System, has already been deployed across the armed forces.
