"Collecting Plastic Bottles... Just Call and It Comes" Autonomous Robot Debuts at Baedari Park in Pyeongtaek
Pyeongtaek City Launches Operation of AI-Based Recycling Collection Robot "Jaero"
Summoned via QR Code... Also Serves as Nighttime Park Patrol
A robot that collects recyclable materials has made its debut at Baedari Ecological Park, a landmark park in Pyeongtaek City, Gyeonggi Province.
On December 1, Pyeongtaek City announced the official launch of "Jaero," an artificial intelligence (AI) recycling collection robot equipped with autonomous driving technology, at Baedari Ecological Park.

This newly introduced robot was developed as part of the "Small Smart City Development Project," a Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport initiative, under its smart services program. It aims to make it more convenient for citizens to dispose of recyclables such as plastic bottles generated while using the park.
Three robots are deployed in the park, operating primarily around the seven QR code zones and charging stations installed near the Water Plaza and Light Plaza. When citizens scan a QR code with their smartphones at various locations in the park, the robot moves to the designated spot to collect recyclables.
The robot is equipped with AI-based object recognition sensors and an emergency stop device. If it detects a pedestrian or obstacle during operation, it immediately stops or avoids it. For pedestrian safety, its speed is limited to under 5 km/h.
At night, the robot also serves as a patrol robot. From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., it patrols designated routes within the park, acting as a "smart park manager" to help ensure citizen safety.
The city plans to expand the service area and further enhance the robot's functions based on the data collected during its operation.
