Developing Batteries Beyond EVs, Including Robotics and AAM
With Hyundai Motor Company and Kia establishing a large-scale battery campus in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province, their battery internalization strategy is expected to accelerate. As the automakers secure infrastructure that enables integrated management of battery design, manufacturing, and control, Hyundai Motor Group is also expected to expand its role as a technological hub within the K-battery ecosystem. Beyond electric vehicles, Hyundai and Kia are also conducting research on robotics and AAM (Advanced Air Mobility) batteries, thereby laying the foundation for energy innovation technologies that will drive the future of mobility as a whole.
The Hyundai-Kia Anseong Battery Campus provides infrastructure to verify and advance the entire process from battery materials to cells, modules, packs, and final installation in vehicles. As the automakers are now equipped to carry out all processes of battery cell manufacturing, there has been speculation about the possibility of direct mass production. However, Hyundai Motor Group clarified, "This is solely about securing core technologies to develop batteries optimized for finished vehicles, not an investment premised on mass production."
Nevertheless, if automakers directly acquire integrated control technologies that link battery design and manufacturing processes with vehicle systems, Hyundai and Kia's influence within the K-battery ecosystem is expected to grow. By understanding battery technologies comprehensively and internalizing them within their development framework, the companies can secure leadership in joint development with battery manufacturers, specification adjustments, and supply condition negotiations.
While Hyundai and Kia's existing research centers focused on the initial design and verification of cell and process technologies, the new battery campus will comprehensively verify and advance the quality and safety required for actual vehicle installation. To this end, Hyundai and Kia have decided to actively apply data analysis technologies, test automation, and artificial intelligence (AI)-based predictive models throughout the R&D process. Through these efforts, they also plan to establish a digital verification system that can precisely predict battery performance and safety in advance.
At the battery campus, Hyundai and Kia will focus research on high-performance lithium-ion battery cells for next-generation electrified vehicles such as electric vehicles and EREVs (Extended Range Electric Vehicles). In addition, they plan to expand their R&D scope to various forms and materials in line with future market and technology trends. Among the leading candidates is the all-solid-state battery, often referred to as the "dream battery." All-solid-state batteries use solid electrolytes instead of liquids, which can simultaneously enhance safety and energy density, making them a next-generation technology of interest. However, securing material and process stability remains a significant challenge.
Hyundai and Kia also plan to develop batteries for next-generation mobility sectors such as robotics and AAM, in addition to automotive batteries. As electrification accelerates in future mobility sectors, demand for high-performance and high-safety batteries is expected to grow rapidly. Robots require batteries with higher energy density than conventional small batteries to enable long-duration autonomous movement and high-output operation. Similarly, AAM demands the development of lightweight, safe, and high-output batteries due to the unique requirements of air mobility.
