Jeju Special Self-Governing Province will host the 'Jeju Cup' International Yacht Race for the first time, with more than 500 athletes and spectators from seven countries, including China, Japan, the United States, and Russia, participating.

The '2025 1st Jeju Cup International Yacht Race' will take place over four days from November 27 to 30 at Doduhang Port in Jeju City. The event is organized by Jeju Province, supervised by the Jeju Yacht Association (President Yang Moonbong), and is the last officially sanctioned race of the year by the Korea Sailing Federation.

The event will begin on the 27th with registration and yacht equipment measurement, followed by the opening ceremony on the 28th. Yacht races featuring international participants will then unfold around Doduhang Port.

As a pre-show for the opening ceremony at Dodu Oraemul Square, the local women's diver group from Doduhang will perform, and popular YouTuber Heebab, a Jeju native with 1.7 million subscribers, will also join the festivities.

From the 28th onward, the races will feature the J/70 yacht, one of the fastest-growing and most popular classes worldwide, where teams will compete in skill and teamwork. A variety of programs will also be available for local residents and tourists to participate in, drawing significant attention.

Spectators can board large yachts, free of charge, to head out to sea and experience the excitement of the yacht races up close.

In addition, there will be a radio-controlled (RC) yacht experience event, allowing local residents and tourists to directly participate and gain a better understanding and familiarity with yachting as a marine leisure sport.

Side events include an artificial intelligence (AI) film festival featuring 50 films themed around Jeju marine leisure, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage haenyeo (female diver) photography exhibition, and a promotional booth for the Southern Bottlenose Dolphin Ecological Corporation initiative.

Oh Sangpil, Director of the Jeju Provincial Department of Oceans and Fisheries, stated, "This event is a festival that communicates with the world and shares the spirit of challenge against the beautiful backdrop of Jeju's sea. Going forward, we will continue to expand programs involving marine leisure sports such as yachting and kiteboarding, fostering exchanges with countries worldwide and encouraging participation not only from professionals but also from local residents and tourists."

Jeju Province plans to use this event as a springboard to further establish itself as a global marine sports mecca and international yacht hub by continuously strengthening its marine leisure infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the word 'yacht' originates from the Dutch word 'jacht,' meaning 'hunt.' It refers to small, light, and fast vessels that the Dutch navy used in shallow coastal waters to pursue pirates.
