Mapo District to Install Elevator on Wayusan Retaining Wall... Completion Set for April Next Year
Accessibility Reduced from 15 Minutes to Under 5 Minutes
Mapo District in Seoul (Mayor Park Gangsu) will install a vertical elevator on a retaining wall to improve access to Wayusan.
Wayusan, one of the eight scenic spots of Mapo, is a popular leisure space visited by about 100,000 residents. However, due to the height difference of the retaining wall along Seogang-ro, people have had to either detour around nearby apartment complexes or cross private property to reach the area. In addition, the current pedestrian routes have deteriorated, making it difficult for seniors, wheelchair users, and children to use them.
In response, Mapo District plans to install a vertical elevator and a connecting bridge on the retaining wall between 2-111 and 3-200 Changjeon-dong. With the elevator, the time needed to reach the trail, which currently takes 15 minutes, is expected to be reduced to less than 5 minutes. The project is scheduled for completion by April next year. On November 20, Mapo District held a residents' briefing session on the "Wayusan Trail (Elevator) Construction Project" for about 100 residents.
The district will place flowers and trees in movable planters along the trail, refurbish safety railings, and apply a coated pavement. The retaining wall will be painted in warm colors, and closed-circuit (CC)TV cameras will be installed to create a safe and pleasant pedestrian environment.
At the briefing session, participants expressed their support for the installation of the elevator. In particular, residents of Changjeon Samsung, Taeyoung, and Sinchon Kumho Apartments said they expect improvements in accessibility and residential environment.
