OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, is reportedly considering entering the artificial intelligence (AI)-based healthcare market.
On November 10 (local time), U.S. business media outlet Business Insider reported, citing sources, that OpenAI is reviewing the development of consumer health tools, including a personal health assistant and health data aggregation services.
Previously, in June, OpenAI recruited Nate Gross, co-founder of the medical platform Doximity. Two months later, the company scouted Ashley Alexander, Vice President at Instagram, appointing her as Vice President in charge of health-related products.
Gross revealed at a digital healthcare expo last month that ChatGPT has 800 million weekly users, with a significant portion of them asking medical-related questions.
Industry experts point out that OpenAI would need to address regulatory issues before entering the medical field. Previously, companies such as Microsoft and Apple attempted to enter the healthcare sector but either abandoned their initiatives or scaled them back due to regulatory challenges. In fact, Verily, Google’s health technology subsidiary, was sued by a former executive for allegedly using patient health data without authorization and attempting to conceal it.
However, Business Insider predicted that, as governments have recently begun easing related regulations and more users are seeking to directly view and manage their health data through digital tools, OpenAI may collaborate with other healthcare companies to collect medical data.

Business Insider also noted, "OpenAI is already partnering with major pharmaceutical companies such as Eli Lilly and Sanofi for drug development, and is working with health tech firm Penda Health to develop an AI-based clinical decision support system."
