Sungshin Cement and Qbeam Solution Develop Shielded Concrete
Demonstrated Improved Gamma Ray Shielding Performance
Sungshin Cement announced on October 20 that it has successfully developed shielded concrete capable of blocking radiation through joint research with Qbeam Solution, a startup from the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute.
Shielded concrete is a type of concrete that can effectively block strong neutrons and gamma rays in various fields such as fusion laboratories, small modular reactors, accelerators, and radiation-utilizing industrial facilities. It is essential for structures requiring shielding. Such structures must simultaneously satisfy high radiation shielding performance, excellent structural stability, and non-magnetic properties. In addition, after operation ends, the radiation level must be reduced to a level safe for human access.
The Sungshin Cement Technology Research Institute and Qbeam Solution produced and tested various specimens, including ordinary concrete, iron ore-based heavyweight concrete, and boron carbide-containing concrete. The iron ore-based concrete demonstrated improved gamma ray shielding performance by increasing density, while the boron-containing concrete exhibited outstanding performance in blocking thermal neutrons.
A representative from Sungshin Cement stated, "It is a meaningful achievement that our high-performance special concrete manufacturing technology has demonstrated new possibilities in the field of radiation shielding. We will continue to focus on developing shielded concrete to meet the needs of various industrial environments."
