Banghakcheon Concrete Retaining Wall Reborn as an Outdoor Gallery Depicting the Four Seasons
Dobong-gu Creates Cultural Walking Path
Featuring Local Scenery and Residents' Writings
A 360-meter stretch of the retaining wall along Banghakcheon in Dobong District, Seoul (from across Geumgang Amioum to Banghakgyo) has been transformed into a cultural promenade filled with vibrant colors and stories.
Earlier this month, Dobong District completed the mural project on the left retaining wall of Banghakcheon, finishing the overall landscape improvement of the area. The mural vividly depicts the four seasons-spring, summer, autumn, and winter-of Banghakcheon, and features poems and phrases written by local residents.

Through the “Banghakcheon Mural Project” contest, the district collected phrases about memories, daily life, and nature from residents and incorporated them into the mural’s design. Residents responded positively, saying, “The previously desolate space has become bright and lively after the retaining wall construction,” and “Now, I enjoy taking walks with my children, taking photos, and reading the phrases on the wall.”
Oh Eon-seok, Mayor of Dobong District, stated, “The Banghakcheon mural is a space where the stories of our residents come together,” adding, “We will continue to maintain and manage Banghakcheon so that it remains a beloved attraction for both local residents and visitors.”
