AI Supremacy Race: OpenAI Partners with AMD for AI Data Center Collaboration
WSJ Reports Multi-Billion Dollar Infrastructure Investment
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on October 6, 2025, that OpenAI has signed a multi-billion dollar artificial intelligence (AI) data center partnership agreement with semiconductor design company AMD.
Starting next year, OpenAI plans to adopt AMD's MI450 chips to secure a total computing power of 6 gigawatts (GW). OpenAI will either purchase the chips directly or lease them through cloud partners such as Oracle.
AMD has issued warrants to OpenAI, allowing it to purchase 160 million shares, equivalent to 10% of AMD's total shares, at $0.01 per share. OpenAI can exercise these warrants if it meets its initial chip adoption targets and AMD's stock price rises. Following this news, AMD's stock price surged by 15% in pre-market trading.
Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, stated, "This partnership will generate billions of dollars in revenue over the next five years," adding, "It is a win-win structure for both companies."
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, also commented, "Securing the computing resources needed for AI operations is becoming increasingly difficult," emphasizing that "industry-wide collaboration is now essential."
While AMD has been strong in the gaming and server chip markets, Nvidia has maintained dominance in the high-performance AI GPU market. This partnership is seen as a strategic turning point for AMD to reclaim leadership in the AI semiconductor sector.
Recently, competition in AI investment has intensified. OpenAI recently signed a $10 billion independent chip development agreement with Broadcom, while Nvidia is set to launch its next-generation GPU, "Vera Rubin," next year. Google and Amazon are also accelerating their own AI chip development efforts.

However, the WSJ pointed out that some in the industry are raising concerns about an "AI bubble." Although OpenAI's annual revenue has increased to about $13 billion, its computing server rental costs alone are expected to reach $16 billion this year. This figure could potentially rise to $400 billion by 2029.
