Jeollanam-do to Hold Maritime Territory Pilgrimage on Yeoseodo, Wando, the 'Island of the Year'
110 Participants Including the General Public and Students to Join on August 7-8
Event Organized to Experience and Reflect on the Value of Islands and the Sea
On August 3, Jeollanam-do announced that it will embark on a maritime territory pilgrimage on Yeoseodo, an island affiliated with Cheongsando in Wando, which is renowned for its scenic beauty. The event, scheduled for August 7-8, will involve 110 participants, including members of the general public and students.
This event has been organized to allow participants to directly experience and reflect on the value of islands and the sea through marine healing activities in Wando, which is known as Korea's leading destination for marine healing, and a maritime pilgrimage around Yeoseodo, an inhabited island that serves as a baseline point for Korea's territorial waters.
Participants will board the Chonnam National University training vessel, 'Saedongbaekho,' and sail the waters off Yeoseodo, where they will be able to personally appreciate the significance of remote border islands and the importance of Korea's maritime territory.
They are expected to experience the island's nature and ecology, as well as its people and way of life, and to return to their daily lives with a renewed sense of pride as citizens who view islands and the sea from a broader perspective.
Park Youngchae, Director of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries for Jeollanam-do, stated, "Through this maritime territory pilgrimage, we hope to reaffirm with the public that the value of islands and the sea is a driving force for future growth." He added, "We will thoroughly prepare for the '2026 Yeosu World Island Expo' to widely promote this value both domestically and internationally."
Meanwhile, Yeoseodo is a representative island of Jeollanam-do, located at the southern end of Dadohaehaesang National Park, and has been jointly selected by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries as the '2025 Island of the Year.'
