At the 'Expert Roundtable on Quantum Science Technology and Industry,' held on July 15 by the Economic Subcommittee 2 of the Presidential National Policy Planning Committee, experts called for a strategic response at the government level. The meeting was organized to discuss national policy directions for fostering quantum science technology and industry, and to incorporate voices from the private sector into national policy agendas.
The roundtable was attended by members of the committee, including Hwang Jeonga, a member of the National Policy Planning Committee, and Lee Choonseok, head of Economic Subcommittee 2, as well as private sector experts in quantum technology such as Kim Junghun, professor at Korea University, Kim Taehyun, professor at Seoul National University, and Eom Sangyun, CEO of IDQ Korea.
The experts shared the current status of research and industrialization in each field, including Quantum AI, quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum sensing, and quantum security. They emphasized that, as a latecomer, South Korea needs preemptive government investment and infrastructure expansion in order to secure global competitiveness.
In particular, there was consensus on the urgent need to strengthen cybersecurity through the establishment of quantum cryptography communication networks and the development of quantum-resistant cryptography, as well as the early adoption of quantum security technologies to protect the nation's core infrastructure.
Additionally, in order to create a quantum industry ecosystem, the experts highlighted the need for an integrated support system centered on a control tower, and identified the development of specialized talent, the establishment of computing hubs, and the creation of testbeds as key tasks to connect basic research to industrialization.
Other topics discussed included the activation of the quantum technology startup ecosystem, the creation of quantum clusters, the expansion of international cooperation, and the need for strategic participation to lead the establishment of global standards.

Lee Choonseok, head of Economic Subcommittee 2, stated, "Quantum science technology, when combined with artificial intelligence, is a core technology that will determine the future national competitiveness," adding, "We will faithfully reflect the proposals made by experts in the implementation plan for national policy agendas."
