'Next-Generation Cooling Battery Pack' Prevents Fires... S-Oil and Bumhan Unisolution Begin Full-Scale Technology Collaboration
S-Oil Develops Battery Packs Using "Immersion Cooling Oil"
Commercialization for ESS Nears... Plans to Expand to Electric Vehicles and More
S-Oil is set to strengthen its collaboration with Bumhan Unisolution, a company specializing in energy storage systems (ESS) and electric vehicle battery packs, in the field of next-generation cooling technology known as "immersion cooling." Building on their achievements in developing systems using S-Oil's dedicated cooling oil, the two companies plan to jointly commercialize technology in the future mobility and energy industries, where thermal management is a key factor.
S-Oil announced on the 17th that it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the joint development of ESS and electric vehicle battery packs based on immersion cooling technology with Bumhan Unisolution at its headquarters in Gongdeok-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, on the 13th. This agreement follows Bumhan Unisolution's development of an ESS system using S-Oil's special cooling oil, "S-OIL e-Cooling Solution," which employs immersion cooling. The system has passed both the domestic safety certification (KC) and the battery thermal runaway response test certification (NFPC 607).

With this agreement, the two companies have decided to expand the application of immersion cooling technology to various fields such as ESS, electric vehicle batteries, and electric propulsion ships, and to continue their mutual technical support and cooperation for commercialization.
Immersion cooling technology involves directly submerging the entire battery cell in a special cooling oil, offering superior heat dissipation compared to conventional air or liquid cooling methods and significantly reducing the risk of fire. It is optimized for devices with high energy density and is gaining attention as a next-generation cooling solution.
