Seoul Semiconductor Narrows Gap with Osram to 1% Point... Poised for No. 2 Market Share
Omdia "Global LED Market Share Ranking"
Seoul Semiconductor up 0.1%... Osram down 2.4%
Securing technological competitiveness with over 18,000 patents
Seoul Semiconductor, a global opto-semiconductor specialist, announced on May 12 that it has maintained stable growth and narrowed the market share gap with 'ams Osram (Germany)', the world's second-largest LED company, to just 1 percentage point (p).
According to the '2024 Global LED Market Share Ranking' recently released by market research firm Omdia, Seoul Semiconductor ranked third last year with a market share of 6%, an increase of 0.1 percentage points from the previous year. In contrast, the top two companies in the global market saw their shares decline, narrowing the gap. Nichia (Japan) recorded a 12% market share, down 1.8 percentage points from the previous year, while Osram, in second place, dropped by 2.4 percentage points to 7%. The market share gap between Osram and Seoul Semiconductor is now just 1%.
Seoul Semiconductor explained that its competitive edge, which led to these results, is based on more than 18,000 patented technologies secured through investing over 10% of its sales in research and development (R&D), even amid ongoing global economic uncertainty. In particular, the company highlighted its acquisition of 'No-wire' technology, a core technology for micro LED displays, and its victory in a patent lawsuit at the Unified Patent Court (UPC) in Europe, which further solidified the position of its No-wire technology.
